What We Are Looking For
Do you want to help make biomedical and biochemical science more accessible to people with disabilities, including blindness/low vision? The Shaw Lab within the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department at Baylor University is seeking to fill a Senior Research Associate position. The research will occur at the interface of assistive technology and biochemistry and will involve the development of assistive technology and interventions to make lab environments accessible to people with disabilities, including blindness/low vision. These assistive technologies will then be used to carry out biochemical/biophysical research with people who have diverse abilities.
A Bachelor's Degree and three years of experience are required. A Bachelor's Degree and five years of experience are preferred. Experience in both areas (developing assistive technology and/or biochemistry/biophysics) is not required. Researchers with any type of disability and/or with a passion to help those with disabilities, are especially encouraged to apply. A combination of education and work experience will be considered in lieu of the required degree and/or years of experience.
Applications must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
What You Will Do
- Collect and analyze data that derives from experiments involving human subjects as well as in vitro biochemistry
- Write research papers, research reports, and grant proposals; to include drafting prose, editing prose, and creating graphics
- Track and order supplies, and materials, maintain and operate lab tools and equipment, and research the procurement of new and/or used scientific equipment, materials, and tools
- Identify and coordinate outreach efforts with institutions/persons outside lab related to accessibility
- Assist in maintaining lab compliance regarding human-subject research and safety protocols. To include making interventions, as requested by institution upon regular safety inspections, and ensuring all lab members follow safety procedures and report repeated infractions
- Perform all other duties as assigned to support Baylor's mission
- Ability to comply with university policies
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance
