Job Summary:

This position is for an Assistant Research Professor whose academic home will be in the Department of Biomedical Informatics. The overall goal of the research group where this faculty member will work is to discover new insights into genome function and the genetic basis of complex human phenotypes through analysis of diverse genetics, genomics, and clinical data. The Stranger Lab is at the forefront of groundbreaking research, merging human genetics, bioinformatics, statistical analysis of multidimensional data, and cutting-edge computer science to unravel the complexities of health and disease. By innovating methods to identify and interpret context-specific genetic effects, the lab is advancing discoveries on the impact of sex and gender on the genetics of complex traits. Our current research spans critical areas including cancer, neuropsychiatric and cardiac traits, immune-mediated traits, clinical laboratory tests, and women's health. We are seeking a passionate individual who is driven to significantly impact the field through groundbreaking research and inventive solutions.

The Assistant Research Professor will be expected to work independently and in collaboration with other members of the research group and other teams on campus and nationally and internationally. They will provide professional and scientifically rigorous statistical genetics and informatics expertise. This may include workflow and tool development, development and testing of computational and analytic solutions, study design and analytic consultation, biostatistics expertise, data visualization techniques, support and mentorship of junior lab members, grant writing, and dissemination of results to a variety of audiences with varying levels of computational and statistical expertise. Primary authorship and co-authorship on abstracts, oral and poster presentations, and scientific manuscripts will be involved. Preference will be given to those with a strong background in statistical genetics and genomics, broad computational skills, and experience with complex data structures, distributed analytic tools, techniques for reproducibility, and open-source solutions.

The Assistant Research Professor will join a highly interactive, supportive, and interdisciplinary group of faculty, staff scientists, postdoctoral fellows, engineers, and students in the Department for Biomedical Informatics who are inventing and deploying advanced analytics and knowledge integration approaches. They will also join the thriving community of the Ludeman Family Center for Women's Health Research that supports women's health research and the researchers leading discoveries in sex and gender medicine and women's health. The goal of building this community is to make the Anschutz Medical Campus a leader in translating data into advances in research discoveries, health care delivery, and population health and in scaling these to provide nationwide benefit through innovative technologies.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and lead data management, processing, and analysis using a variety of methods, approaches, and visualizations, including development of new computational solutions. (55%)
  • Write and submit grant proposals to secure funding for research projects. (15%)
  • Disseminate research findings by writing and publishing in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at national and international conferences. (5%)
  • Manage data storage and access for the group. (5%)
  • Manage laboratory resources, maintain website, and ensure compliance with institutional and federal regulations. (5%)
  • Assist in onboarding, supervision, and mentoring of graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and research staff. (15%)

Work Location:

Hybrid - this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 3 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
  • PhD degree in PhD in Statistical Genetics, Human Genetics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Biostatistics, or related field
  • 8 years professional experience analyzing human genetics and genomics data
  • 5 years professional experience with distributed and cloud computing, version control, and techniques for reproducibility

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Significant biomedical research output including being first and/or last author on high-impact peer-reviewed publications.
  • Experience with successful grant writing.
  • Experience managing and mentoring trainees and/or research staff
  • Experience collaborating in Human Genetics and/or Genomics Consortia
  • Experience managing or co-managing multi-user Linux-based computational servers
  • Experience with web-site creation and maintenance
  • Experience applying machine learning techniques for genetic/genomic applications
  • Experience wrangling, cleaning, and analyzing electronic health record data

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong knowledge of statistical principles relevant in human population genetics, statistical genetics, and genomics research
  • Knowledge of standard genetics research resources, eg biobanks, Consortia, standard computational tools and approaches
  • Experience working with human sex chromosome genetics and genomics data, preferred.
  • Ability to analyze and creatively solve complex problems
  • Strong programming skills in R, Python, SQL
  • Strong skills in data visualization.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to disseminate results to a wide variety of audiences
  • Commitment to health equity, as well as interest in women's health and sex differences.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

$120,000 to $145,000.
